Swedish massage uses long, slow, gliding strokes, most of which are referred to as
effleurage, maintain contact with the body and are done to superficial layers of muscle
for the purpose of increasing circulation and enhancing relaxation. Effleurage is
primarily performed using the broad palm surface of the hands. Thumbs, fingers, and
knuckles may also be used. The term "effleurage" is derived from a French word
referring to strokes that glide over the surface of the skin. In addition, sometimes active
and passive joint movements are used to improve range of motion. Passive joint
movements require another person to move body parts through a full range of motion
around a joint. Active joint movements are performed independently and without
assistance.
Deep tissue massage is a technique involving the use of slow, deep and intense
massage strokes across the grain and to deeper layers of the muscle to heal physical
injuries, chronic tension and emotional stresses within the body. It can be used to
release trapped nerves and correct damaged muscle tissue, manage pain, as well as to
soften hard muscles which have caused joint restriction and structural misalignment. A
technique, called friction, is often used in physical rehabilitation settings to address scar
tissue. This technique involves deep finger or digital pressure and small movements
across or along muscle or tendon fibers.
Shiatsu originated in Japan, is a technique that uses finger, thumb, and palm pressure
to manipulate pressure points (those used with acupuncture) along the entire body with
the intent of increasing the body's energy flow. It is based on the belief that the body is
composed of meridians (channels of energy). Blockages in meridians cause physical
discomfort and shiatsu is intended to release blockages by applying direct pressure to
points along the meridians and restore natural energy flow.
Thai massage incorporates partnered full body stretches in which one person positions another's body to create a stretch for various muscles. The stretching of tissue is intended to facilitate circulation and range of motion.
Sports/clinical massage is intended to encourage optimal physical performance by
assisting in recovery from vigorous activity and aiding in the management of injury.
Deep pressure exerted with the palms and fingers as well as strokes applied
perpendicular to muscle fibers, attempt to enhance contractile ability. Sports/clinical
massage is frequently used in rehabilitation settings and with athletes.
Craniosacral massage is designed to enhance the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to prevent
imbalances or blockages that may cause sensory or motor problems. Very light digital
pressure applied at the base of the skull, along the spine, and at the sacrum is intended
to release areas of restriction and compression.
Hot Stone Massage is an advanced, gentle, restorative massage modality. It involves the application of warm and/or hot stones, sometimes in alternation with cold stones, in conjunction with deep tissue treatment and meridian therapy. Stones of varying sizes are applied to key points on the body, giving a deep massage and creating sensations of comfort and warmth. The direct heat relaxes muscles, allowing manipulation of a greater intensity than with regular massage. The heat produces vasodilatation and increases circulation to the tissue. Application of cold produces vasoconstriction and drains the area. The combination of deep tissue and Swedish massage increases the effectiveness of the massage treatment.
Prenatal Massage focuses on the mother-to-be as she goes through the changes due to pregnancy. This is not a replacement for medical care, but rather as an adjunct to aid in the health and rapid recovery of the mother. Certified therapists will focus treatment on the concerns of each trimester. After the mother has given birth, treatment will assist in restoring the body back to its normal condition. Prenatal massage may also help reduce and/or eliminate excess water retention. Prenatal massage is fast growing in the United States and around the entire globes as it has attracted the interest of labor and delivery nurses, nurse-midwives, childbirth educators and obstetricians. Massage therapy enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves circulation and general body tone, and relieves mental and physical fatigue.
